I love reading and learning in any way, shape or form.
You know what they say: “Leaders are readers.”
The truth is that some of the best lessons for me didn’t come from a long speech or big book, etc.
Some of the biggest “A-HA” moments have came to me with short statements, lessons, paragraphs or chapters.
Sometimes it was just a few words.
I believe we sometimes feel that success in life is a complicated mathematical formula that only the “chosen few” understand and stems from drawn out long processes that take a long time to grasp.
But the truth is that it is simple.
I didn’t say it was easy, just simple.
The sentence that changed a lot for me was this one...
“Action alleviates anxiety...but only 100% of the time.”
ACTION!
Why an Arnold pic? Because he took ACTION day in and day out (and he grew up 30 minutes from where I grew up...)
When bad things happen or I get stressed out, I look at my goals and start taking action on them. This always alleviates my anxiety. Always!
It doesn’t mean that the problems are not there or that the stress and anxiety won’t repeat itself because of this, that or the other reason.
What it does mean is that when things happen that make you stressed out or anxious, you can re-program yourself with what you do after.
Most of the time when we get anxiety, we start focusing on the problem and putting it under a microscope, which essentially brings it closer and magnifies it, getting us to focus on it more and increasing our anxiety.
It’s a vicious cycle.
To re-program yourself and get away from those feelings of anxiety, every time they pop up, be aware of them and then go take an action step towards your goals.
“But what goals are you talking about Luka, what should I do?”
It could be things that will improve your fitness, career, relationship, family or anything else. It could be something that will improve your happiness.
Sit down and write down the things that make you happy when you do them (by yourself, not with anyone else). Take 3-5 minutes.
And GO...
Ok, now write out your goals for anything else that you want to achieve. It can be in health, fitness, your career, travel, etc. Don’t just write out small things either; write out the 5-10 years down the line goals. You get 3-5 minutes for that too.
GO!
You should have a bunch of goals written down along with things you do that make you happy.
Organize them into bullet points so it’s simple to look over.
Fold that piece of paper and put it into your wallet or pocket and carry it around everywhere with you. And I mean EVERYWHERE!
Whenever you get stressed out and anxiety hits you, follow these steps:
#1 – Be aware of what is happening
#2 – Pull out your piece of paper with your goals and things that make you happy
#3 – Take ACTION and do one of them
This is not easy.
It’s simple.
It shows you that even though you may not have control over everything, you do have control of how you react.
React with action and things that make you feel good.
The more you do it the more you will re-wire how you react in stressful situations.
This doesn’t change everything overnight. But it IS a game (life) changer.
Thing is it will only change if you take ACTION on it.
Action always moves you forward because it makes things happen. It’s the only thing that moves things forward.
With that said you can take action after reading this post or you can decide to “do something later”, “wait on it” or some other excuse that will not take you towards the direction of your goals.
Maybe nothing groundbreaking; most epiphanies never are.
I hope that this was your “A-HA” moment.
And if not then maybe this interview with the Sensai Martin Rooney will do it for you...
So are you going to start taking action?
