Do you think it helps to surround yourself with people that are smarter than you or are where you want to be in a certain area? On top of it all they are positive people?
The answer was most probably YES!
On the other hand, do you think that there is benefit, a good feeling or any positives hanging around people that want to bring you down, talk negative about everything and talk more about others and how things “can’t be done” vs. looking for solutions?
Your answer to this was most probably NO!
And if those weren’t the answers then I’ll need to direct you somewhere you can receive help I can’t provide for you.
The bottom line is, being around people that are positive and pushing to better them selves every day, inspires us to do the same; and the other way around.
Consistently being around negative people brings you down and dampens your drive, creativity, and just makes you less happy. Period.
To change you circumstances you have to check yourself and be honest about the environment you’re in and whether it is helping you achieve the things that you want.
If you are on a mission to get in the best shape of your life, drop body fat and improve your performance so you can feel like you used to (and then some), but the company you surround yourself with keeps going out to eat all the time while having some drinks and never training; then you are setting yourself up for failure.
That is why a results gym like Vigor Ground Fitness and Performance is such a great environment. It goes beyond the fact we deliver great results and have a team whose mission is to find your why and help you achieve your goals. A huge part of the success that is bred there is because of all the awesome members that are pursuing their own goals and helping each other out.
There is a positive energy and members share their successes and help others overcome obstacles that they have already had to overcome themselves.
Setting yourself up for success vs. setting yourself up for failure. Much of it comes down to the environment and atmosphere you expose yourself to.
Why do these guys below hang out together? Exactly! (you’ll just have to get used to me referencing super heroes as I’ll never grow up when it comes to that. And why should I???)
I wanted to make sure that I surround myself with positive people that lift me up and not pull me down, which is why I go to a lot of training, business and self-development seminars, conferences and workshops. It’s also why I have always had coaches that are where I want to be and they push me to the next level. On a daily and weekly basis I am on the phone with like-minded people with whom I talk about ideas and possibilities and how to make them happen.
Doing these things has become a part of my life. At first it was difficult to make those changes especially because I had to be honest with myself about who is good for me and who is pulling me down. And let’s be honest sometimes the people we least expect are the one’s pulling us down!
I started scheduling and committing to things that were great for me in terms of reaching my goals or even just being in a positive environment. Lunch with people that got me excited and had me thinking creative, training with people stronger than me or better than me in a certain field/method.
Something I started doing not long ago was meeting with some of my friends and peers from the Seattle area and just training together and coaching each other, talking business, training and life; and just having fun. To change the scenery we meet up at my friend Andrea’s gym Kettlebility in Green Lake (changing scenery is very important too).

Every week I learn something new (or sometimes I just remember something I forgot) and become a better coach, have a good time and there are no downsides, we all get better.
How To Add More Positive Into Your Life Right Now:
- First “check yourself”! This is the most important step. Be honest who are the negative influences around you and who are the positive influences around you. Removing the negative and replacing with positive is the hardest step but its necessary if you want to improve yourself, reach your goals and be happier.
This may sound harsh but take a piece of paper and write out the positive times, places and people one side of the paper and the negative one’s on the other side. I have found that writing these things out gives you a lot more clarity and it becomes more real and something you can and should act on. - Start with one step at a time and focus on an action step that can be done instantly (not weeks or months down the line). Set up a weekly coffee/tea meeting with a mentor, peer or someone that inspires you and pushes you to do great things. Commit to a training partner that will hold you accountable on a regular basis. Get together with a group, like a mini mastermind; push each other to keep taking actions towards your goals.
- Be extremely diligent to make sure you make your commitments and act on anything that you get out of the meetings. This is even more important from the beginning because it motivates you, results keep inspiring you and you get “momentum”! One thing about momentum is that once you have it, there needs to be an external force to stop it. This helps create great habits and keep them in place!
- Once you have a made the positive meeting a habit, add another commitment to do something positive for yourself. Sometimes it doesn’t need to be with someone else and it can just be a structured time for you to read, study, watch DVD’s, have fun with some training you wanted to work on with a new tool or something you have seen someone else recommend. Don’t over-commit but if you add one thing at a time and make sure it becomes consistent and a habit before adding the next, then you’ll instill continuous growth into your life (Kaizen).
- As you make these changes, assess your progress with goals you set out for yourself. If we’re not assessing we’re guessing, no matter what area of life we want to improve. It’s easy to keep a blind eye to the actual progress and whether there is any. If we are on the right path then continue to add and go down the path. If there is no change then assess, find out why by being honest and create a new strategy.
Take action right away. Take the next step. Do it! Without action there is nothing.
